This hotfix (Q326469) is incorporated into Windows XP's SP2. Some major PC manufacturers such as IBM and HP have not yet finished their own compatibility testing of SP2, and have not yet recommended that their customers install the update. If it's not installed, you'll need to download and install it. Due to compatibility issues, the release of SP2 was delayed several times. SP2 also includes major updates to Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and Windows XP Media Center Edition. Other features include enhancements to the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), now the Windows Firewall (which is also turned on by default), advanced memory protection that takes advantage of the NX instruction that is incorporated into newer processors to stop buffer overflow attacks, and improvements to email and web browsing. This edition helps to suppress spyware and viruses. It also includes a new API to allow third party virus scanners and firewalls to interface with a new security center application which provides a general overview of security on the system. The right web browser can change the way you surf the web and view your favorite sites. As newer versions of Chrome only work with newer operating systems, this version works on older devices.

I would suggest turning off auto-updates, or setting to notify only, otherwise it will attempt to apply a lot of "in between" updates which will be obsoleted by the service pack.It is also possible, if you are seeing high CPU, that you are suffering the "update jam" cause by a pending Internet Explorer Cumulative - if so, then apply the current cumulative.The XP update system does not seem as refined as for W7 - on XP, it seems you often need to visit the windowsupdate site to get things moving.Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) was released on Augand focuses on security. You can download it from the Windows Update Catalog website (you can only access it in Internet Explorer, and need to install the ActiveX component for it). To re-iterate, according to their site, SP3 requires a minimum of SP1, or can also be installed over SP2.SP2 does NOT depend on SP1, so the Microsoft suggestion is to apply SP2 (if not already at SP1), then SP3. Better the secutity and stability of Windows XP.
